Mmmmm…Fried Pies

Okay, am I just showing my age? Lisa at “Outnumbered” claims she doesn’t remember McDonald’s apple pies being fried rather than baked. (UPDATE: OK, what Lisa meant was she didn’t remember when McD’s switched. She says I’m not as old as her parents. Yeah, that makes me feel a lot better!) According to Cynthia Tsao the change came in 1992. I’m sure it was a result of the mindset that fried foods are bad. Of course, a baked applie pie full of sugar, preservatives and who knows what else is probably not the healthiest thing to eat anyway. Now it just tastes worse so you feel like your eating better. Actually the fried pies also have vents in the crust so that yummy filling is no longer the same temperature as the Earth’s core. Did anyone ever wait for it to cool before taking a bite?
Cynthia also lists McDonald’s locations where you can still find the original fried applie pies. Unfortunately none are in Virginia.
So, who else remembers the old deep-fried pies? Which do you prefer, baked or fried? Is there even any question?
Hey now, I had fried apple pies, I just didn’t remember when they switched! I’m not trying to make you feel old … you’re not as old as my parents.
I’m sure the fried pies were much better — I love fried anything better. I never ever wait for the pies to cool before I take a bite … and I’ve always burned my mouth.
Hi! Came over from Lisa’s blog.
I always burned my mouth too! Still like apple pies either way.
How about this…I can remember when my town got its first McDonald’s… and I’m not all that much older than Lisa (in the whole scheme of age anyway). “Old” seems to be getting constantly redefined in my mind these days
“Old” has been redefined for me too. I have a friend who jokes about being older than me, but I don’t think of her being older at all. We all remember when we thought 30 was old, and yet here we are … looking foward to it. Now, “old” to me is feeble & frail, trouble walking, can’t even get down to the floor to sit down, let alone get up again. What’s a few gray hairs?? (yes, I actually do have some!)
Was that NB up there?? Hi! Thanks for stopping by my new friend James’s blog. He needs some more readers — he’s got some good stuff here!!
James, I’m almost 54, does that make you feel better?
Hi James,
I remember fried pies and I’m still in my 30s
maybe that will make you feel better.
